senegal The Senegambian community in Pittsburgh is composed of vibrant individuals whose professional sectors of integration and contribution to American society run the gammit from corporate board rooms to academia, through arts and commerce; tourism and transatlantic business. Maybe, precisely because of the extremely diverse socio-professional, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds of the 40-70 persons of Senegalese and Gambian citizenship/descent in the greater Pittsburgh area, there are no formal, constructed, sustained, relations bringing us all together as a community.

We do not have an association, and although we have a solid interpersonal and family-to-family system of solidarity, we don’t organize community meetings or gatherings but are individually extremely active in all kinds of civil society organizations in the city, nationally, and internationally. Many members of the Senegambian community in Pittsburgh are self-employed and run thriving businesses.
